Some lawmakers have hoped that elements of a bipartisan stimulus package could be added to the spending law needed to avoid a government ceasefire on Dec. 11, while this could complicate passport-must-legislation. Still, McConnell suggested Tuesday that the spending law could be a way to pass targeted coronavirus relief. But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in Congress, said he doubted lawmakers would pass a package before the election, when he had not been directly involved in the talks. Mr Mnuchin said he spoke with President Donald Trump this week and that Mr Trump agreed to spend up to $1 trillion on a new law. Senator Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.), the Senate`s second-highest Democrat, participated in the discussions, but did not appear with lawmakers at Tuesday`s news conference. In a speech, Durbin cited disagreements with the group`s decisions and argued that he should have ruled out the liability shield, but he said, “I`m always willing to work on it. Let us not make the enemy of the good for the better. The new plan came amid a flood of congressional pressure on the form of economic relief, with House Democrats forming a new proposal, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) building a new plan, and President-elect Joe Biden calling for a massive government response.
The growing calls to action have not resulted in a uniform approach, prompting political leaders to move in different directions. Congress` message is that we value important workers, but we will not fight to pay them. It seems that whatever the conjunctural agreement between Trump, Pelosi and McConnell, the payment of risks for important workers will simply not be included. A recovery plan is finalized before January.
